Now that’s pretty strange…

Believe it or not, this is the North Pole of Saturn. It is unclear how an unusual hexagonal cloud system that surrounds Saturn’s north pole was created, keeps its shape, or how long it will last. Originally discovered during the Voyager flybys of Saturn in the 1980s, nobody has ever seen anything like it elsewhere in the Solar System.

Beautiful drawing, brilliant concept.

For the month of December, artist Dan McCarthy created this stunning glow-in-the-dark poster of the aurora borealis (or the northern lights). Sadly, the 5 color screen print has already sold out but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it.

From an altitude of over 5,000 meters, the night sky view from Chajnantor Plateau in the Chilean Andes is breathtaking in more ways than one. The dark site’s rarefied atmosphere, at about 50 percent sea level pressure, is also extremely dry. That makes it ideal for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) designed to explore the universe at wavelengths over 1,000 times longer than visible light.

Another awesome hotel from Tree Hotel in Northern Sweden…

The UFO room, wich is built to house four people, is particularly unique. From the outside the unit looks out of place in the forest environment. But then again where would a UFO blend in with its surroundings? Nevertheless, the UFO looks realistic, like a spaceship you would only see in the movies or your imagination. Beyond the futuristic exterior is a modern and comfortable interior with celestial accents.

A magic photo…

As ESO tested the new Wendelstein laser guide star unit by shooting a powerful laser beam into the atmosphere, one of the region’s intense summer thunderstorms was approaching — a very visual demonstration of why ESO’s telescopes are in Chile, and not in Germany. Heavy grey clouds threw down bolts of lightning as Martin Kornmesser, visual artist for the ESO outreach department, took timelapse photographs of the test for ESOcast 34.
