Beautiful and a little bizarre…

The plane, from dream to finish, immediately captured the attention of the world—as much for its striking form as its faster-than-sound function. It’s fascinating to view the design process as a sort of gradient here, as engineers continued to narrow the plane’s silhouette into the lean, bird-like bullet that actually broke the sound barrier. The original, fat-headed prototype isn’t without its own sort of bizarre charms, I’ll admit.

There’s once again a full-blown air war over Afghanistan. Last month, NATO attack planes dropped their bombs and fired their guns on 700 separate missions, according to U.S. Air Force statistics. That’s more than double the 257 attack sorties they flew in September 2009, and one of the highest single-month totals of the entire nine-year Afghan campaign.

Test flights will begin next year, although this aircraft will only serve as a test bed for future aircraft…

Named Taranis, for the Celtic god of thunder, the prototype aircraft will test the possibility of a long-distance striker controlled by ground crews, the Ministry of Defence says.
