Stunning colour, really captures a calmness within the chaos…

German photographer Thomas Birke is fascinated by metropolitan areas. Here, he shows us a side to Hong Kong we don’t often get to see. “I am most interested in density,” he says. “My aspiration is to show at least 1,000 people or their traces on every picture. Be it the illuminated windows of their apartments, the light streaks of their vehicles or their clothes hung out of windows for drying. Even if you do not see people directly, you can see their footprint on the urban environment.”

Brilliant and slightly bewildering!

After wondering for some time whether it was possible to image the sky from one morning to the next where I live in Athens Greece, I decided to give it a try. After hours of planning and preparation, and a full day of shooting, the image above is the result of this labor of love. It took me about 12 hours to pull together and process a single image that included over 500 star trails, 35 shots of the Sun and 25 landscape pictures.

Stunning…

How can the majesty of the night sky best be captured in a painting? This was a continual challenge for Vincent van Gogh, a famous painter in the late 1800s who pioneered stirring depictions of star filled skies into several of his works. Pictured above is van Gogh’s Starry Night Over the Rhone, where the French town of Arles is depicted complete with gas lights reflecting off the Rhone river.
